Finding out why a switch is disabling power/data to a PoE device

The best way to find out why the switch is disabling power and/or data to a PD (Powered Device) is to have a network engineer watch the Cisco (or other switch) CLI while the unit is plugged-in.

If it is able to connect successfully the log should look like this:


If it doesn’t allow the connection, it will spell out why, as in the example below:

The document attached shows what the commands look like on a Cisco switch to check the PoE settings. You should be able to pull similar report on other switches.

The terminology can be confusing as you can see. Where “Power drawn from the source” (25W) is actually different from “Actual consumption measured at the port” (14.2W).
